  3. Ok cool

Without going into too much detail or specifics, basically i am a visual artist/illustrator who creates artist books, small self publications etc
I predominantly create characters + concepts.
I am trying to teaching myself some special effects techniques for an exhibition idea that i have been working on.
So that means taking a side step from my normal practice...which is cool, as i have always wanted to get into special effects at some stage.
I t seems like a natural evolution or step to my work.

I am going a little nuts as to where i can find specific materials to make some things like mother moulds etc.

I have started the Dick Smith basic 3d special effects course, as it is nice + simple + pretty good with explanations (You tube is also very helpful).

So i thought i would ask you where i might be able to find thing like just alginate in Brisbane...???....(not a mini mould making kit alginate...!...as that seems to be the only stuff i can find)

+ a few other bits + bobs for my kit to start.

Factors that are making it tough are

    1. I live in Brisbane ...there seems to be no places to buy in Brisbane for special effects

    +

    2. online stuff is really expensive for postage (I have a meager budget being a self employed/freelance artist)

Like i said - its' for an exhibition that i would like to get happening eventually, so i don't want to go into detail here about what exactly i am going to be doing.

You might not be able to help + i understand that i have given you not much to work with in terms of info.

    Thanks for your time

    E J

  4. Dear EJ
Yes unfortuately we have limited Brisbane supplies for Special Effects.
You could get a 5kg pack of alginate from Dental Suppliers here. I havent for awhile so phone around.
A major of artist buy from:
    1. Barnes Products - Sydney - they are reopening a store here before the end of year they one we had closed 12 months ago.
    2. Rowe Trading Company - Richmond SA.
You will be able to get all the products and books you need from these two suppliers.
Postage yes is a problem, but its just the way it is.
Also take a look at 'Body Double' - Smooth On product as you can use it for casting on skin and unlike alginate you can re- use it.
If you are not casting on skin there silicone molds are the best as they allow for undercuts (get it out of mold).

    websites are:
    www.rowetrading.com.au
    www.barnes.com.au

For Makeup supplies - not a wide range
Latona's at Wavell Heights BNE- Carine or Abigal
    ACMUSE in Sydney www.makeupcollege.com.au
    Scott Latimer
    check them out on net.
Let me know if there is anything else I can suggest.
    Cheers Kym
